How It Happened

Picture
Rob and I have been together for four years and have been living together for nine months. Rob told me that he would propose, but I just had to give him time. I had started to get wedding fever, so I would drop not-so-subtle comments regarding wedding preparations. In September, Rob and I went away to Cape May, NJ for our annual anniversary trip. I thought for sure he would propose on that weekend. I was very disappointed when he didn't.

Fast forward a couple of weeks and it is Rob's 34th birthday. We had reservations at a Virginia steakhouse, Ray's the Steaks, with a few close friends. Since our reservations weren't until 8:30, Rob asked if I wanted to go down to the FDR Memorial to walk around. The memorial is beautiful in the evening, and I was more than happy to go. We were walking around the monument, and then at the end, Rob said he wanted to go near the water. Of course, I was thinking how beautiful this would be to propose. As I was thinking this, Rob asked what time it was, "7:02" I said. He then turned to me and asked if I was ready for this "rocket ride that is life." I said, "WHAT?" He then got on one knee, said a bunch of mushy, beautiful stuff and asked me to marry him! I nodded and screamed until he said, "is that a yes" I said, "Of course!" and I couldn't even kiss him because I couldn't stop smiling!

We called everyone immediately. We then went to our reservations at Rays the Steaks, but when we got there the power was out and Rays was not seating anyone. Rob held up my hand and said, "But I just did this!" The maitre d took us to a table and brought us champagne. It was perfect.

My ring is a one-of-a-kind. Rob worked with his Aunt Rachel in designing the ring. The ring has 27 diamonds. 22 of the diamonds are from his Grandmother's rings, then four of them are from his Aunt Rachel's rings and the one in the middle is new and just for me. This ring is so sentimental, and means the world to me. Once I have children, I will pass the ring on to one of them.

The picture I have above does not do the ring justice. Rob and I will be getting engagement pictures taken in the spring, and I hope to update the picture then.
